Usually, the coloured parts of clear stickers are slightly translucent due to toner limitations.

However, we offer white ink printing, where we print a layer of white ink behind your design to make it fully opaque with richer colours.

This option also allows for parts of the design to be printed in white if that is required.

Please note: If you require white ink printing, your order will take 1-2 days longer to print as we must manually review and proof the artwork to make sure everything is exactly as you require.

Clear

Our HERMA PP 50 transparent label material provides a transparent background for a custom shape effect without the additional cost of die cutting.

With our white ink capabilities, we can also include fully opaque elements within your label, making our material the ideal choice for premium transparent labels with rich colour depth.

The thickness of the finished material is approximately 70 micron, it is recommended only for indirect food contact. For more information about our clear polypropylene material (including topcoat, liner and adhesive) please see our spec sheet here.

Metallic

This HERMA PP silver polypropylene material has been developed in Germany and is considered the finest material in the print market today for metallic labels. It provides a high-shine, reflective metal finish which exudes luxury and sophistication.

What about different metallic colours?

This is where our Color-Logic technology comes in. With this, we can print transparent coloured inks over the metallic silver material to create a metallic finish in a huge range of colours. This can even include metallic patterns and gradients on any parts of the artwork you wish.

Please describe what you would like in the notes box during checkout, or if you have a particularly complex requirement, please contact us.

Polypropylene

Polypropylene is a plastic-based material, similar in appearance to vinyl, which provides many advantages over paper. It’s waterproof, weatherproof, UV resistant, tear-resistant and more durable overall than paper.

It’s perfect for months of outdoor use, harsher environmental applications or where extra durability is important.

Polypropylene is particularly suitable for use as promotional labels for advertising outdoors, as well as product labels which need to withstand scuffs and/or possible contamination from liquids in drinks, food items, cosmetic products, oil-based products and cleaning agents.

Polypropylene is environmentally safe, and in combination with our FDA-approved toner, is safe for use on drink and food products providing that the label is placed on the outside of any external packaging. If you’ll be placing labels where food or drink might come into direct contact with them, or where complete food-safety is vital (i.e. children’s toys), then paper is a better solution. If in doubt, give us a call and we can advise you further.

The adhesive of our polypropylene labels will apply to most items and has a very strong adhesion, but due to its tear-resistant nature, it can be peeled off with ease without leaving any residue behind. This is in contrast to paper which is likely to rip if there’s an attempt to remove it.

Our polypropylene material has a transparent acrylic based adhesive that can withstand temperatures of -30 °C to +80 °C (up to +95 °C for short periods). Once applied the adhesive is not sensitive to humidity and features strong resistance to light, heat and aging. All of the ingredients of the adhesive comply with recommendations BfR XIV or FDA 21 CFR 175.105.

Paper

Paper material is a more cost-effective solution than polypropylene material and is used to produce high-quality labels for advertising and products. The most popular uses being for general packaging as well as bottles, jars, containers and tins.

The paper material provides a good adhesion to low energy surfaces, and adheres around corners and edges of products better than a polypropylene. It does have limited resistance to moisture, temperature and liquids, making it suitable for indoor use only. If you require water and weather resistant labels, then polypropylene will be a better option.

Paper is also completely food-safe, meaning that it can even be used with direct contact on dry or moist non-fatty foods. It’s also useful for any products which may come into direct mouth contact. If you’re unsure which material to use for food applications, just call us and we can advise you further.

Our paper material uses a permanent acrylic based adhesive which can withstand temperatures of -30 °C to +80 °C (up to +95 °C for short periods). It is best for labelling rough or slightly curved surfaces and is highly resistant to light, heat and ageing. All of the ingredients comply with recommendations BfR XIV or FDA 21 CFR 175.105.

Martele White

White Ink

This quick guide explains white ink technology. This involves printing a white base layer on the label in the shape of your design, and then printing the necessary colours on top of that white base instead of printing directly on the clear (transparent) polypropylene. The result is fully opaque colours which are richer.

We’ve showcased some examples below, but if in doubt, or if you require any assistance regarding your artwork, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Clear labels with no white ink

As you can see from the first image, there is a slight transparency to the design. This is because CMYK toners used to print clear labels are not completely opaque. These labels are best suited for light or white coloured surfaces.

Gradients are not recommended without white ink as they may not work due to there being no white base, which allows the subtle colour differences to be more visible. If you compare image 1 to image 2 below, you’ll notice that the flame in the artwork of image 2 is more vivid due to the white ink.

white ink

Clear labels with white ink base behind artwork

As you can see from image 2 below, which has a white base added underneath the artwork, the colours are now more vibrant and fully opaque. The gradient on the flame has also been achieved and is more vibrant due to the white base layer being added behind.

Note: If you select white ink, please let us know where you would like the white base behind your artwork in the notes section when uploading your artwork. For example, you could state all elements of the design, or all text, partial text or a specific graphic.

white ink

Clear labels with white ink base behind artwork, plus white text

A great feature of white ink is the ability to print any part of your transparent label in white as a primary colour, including white text. As you can see in image 3 below, there’s a white base layer underneath the coloured parts of the design to make them opaque and more vivid, and also a white tagline which has been printed with the white toner.

Note: If you choose this option, please let us know in the ‘notes’ box when uploading your artwork where you would like the white ink to be used. For example, a description for image 3 below could be “VRBOXES.COM and the flame graphic with a white base, and "Virtual reality for your smartphone” in white ink".

white ink

Please note: If you require white ink, we can only accept vectored images that are supplied in an EPS, AI or vectored PDF format as your supplied artwork. If you cannot supply this file type, we can set up the artwork and vector it correctly for an additional charge.

Reverse Print

As you can see in the first image, the label has been printed normally, so it’s stuck on the outside of the window with the design facing outwards.

The label in the second image has been reverse printed, which means that it’s stuck to the outside of the window, but the design is flipped around to face inwards, so the orientation of the design will appear correct to those viewing the label from inside the window.

This gives you the following options depending on label placement:

  • Stuck on the outside of the window facing out – normal print
  • Stuck on the inside of the window facing in – normal print
  • Stuck on the outside of the window facing in – reverse print
  • Stuck on the inside of the window facing out – reverse print

Gloss Finish

Our HERMA Gloss Clear Overlaminating Film is a permanent emulsion acrylic adhesive which is applied over the standard gloss finish.

This lamination results in a glossier appearance whilst providing enhanced protection against surface moisture and abrasion. Colours will also appear more vibrant and provide images with more depth.

Gloss overlaminating film is suitable for indirect food contact. For more information about gloss lamination, please see our spec sheet here.

Matt Finish

The HERMA Matte Clear Overlaminating Film is a permanent emulsion acrylic adhesive which is applied over the standard matt finish.

This lamination further enhances the silk effect of matt with minimal reflection to accentuate the luxurious finish which is common of matt labels.

Matt is also a better choice for readability and barcode reliability, and it makes it possible to write on the label with a pencil or ball point pen.

Matt overlaminating film is suitable for indirect food contact. For more information about matt lamination, please see our spec sheet here.
